Have you ever marvelled at the beauty of a decorative pillar with its eye catching glint of gold? Or admired the graining and marbling in a beautiful old house? Or stopped to look in amazement at a beautiful scene, only to realise that it is painted? These decorative features were produced by craftsmen by hand, and this service is available today. True decorative art which will last is only achieved by traditional methods.

In the craft of gilding, fine gold leaf or powder is applied to a solid surface, this may be wood, stone or metal and the result is a thin layer of gold over the surface. At Decowell Restoration traditional methods are used for that authentic look. Oil gilding and water gilding techniques are both used. Oil gilding is used for general decoration and with appropriate preparation oil gilding can be applied to most building surfaces, both indoors and out. Water gilding is a more elaborate process requiring greater preparation, but its elegance and refinement of finish are unsurpassed. Water gilding is used mainly for picture frames, furniture, religious artefacts, sculpture, objets d'art and also for the embellishment of stately buildings. A decorative artist knows how to use these fascinating techniques to produce the best possible finish, and these skills should only be used by a first class professional gilder, such as Decowell restoration.

Another technique used by craftsmen is graining and marbling. Marbling and graining is the painting of a surface, to give the appearance that it is made of wood or marble. The technique is at least 4000 years old, and consists of adding successive layers of transparent paint (glaze) to build up the illusion of depth and luminosity. The total effect can be simply stunning. Graining and marbling has been increasing in popularity, and now it is a technique used in many houses, as well as part of a restoration process.

An accomplished decorative artist can also produce breathtaking pieces of work such as murals, including trompe l’oeil, where the eye can be deceived into seeing an effect which is not actually there. This is down to the skill of the professional decorative artist and some stunning examples can be seen at Decowell Restoration, for example where you can look out onto scenery and almost believe it is real. This takes a highly skilled decorative artist to produce this magnificent effect.

Does the location of your student’s desks really make a difference? The answer to both of those questions is yes – sort of. The way you divide and organize your classroom can have an impact on how much attention your students give you and their lessons, and of course what they ultimately learn. Organize your classroom in the wrong manner and your children’s attention may be divided in a way that is not conducive to what you are trying to teach. So, how should you arrange your seats, desks, learning centers and other classroom furniture? Here are a few tips to help you better arrange and organize your classroom for peak efficiency and optimal learning:

Give your students the room they need to work. As adults we often learn how to work in a cluttered environment, but younger students have not learned that skill yet – nor should they have to. Classrooms can quickly get busy and very cluttered. After all, there are loads of projects to display and supplies to make handy to your students. Unfortunately, in your quest to make everything easily accessible to your class, you may crowding your student’s individual space, making it hard for them to concentrate on the task at hand and get their work completed. Take a good look at your work tables and desks. Do your students have enough arm room, leg room and general space to spread their books out; practice their handwriting without worrying about knocking something over, etc? If not, begin de-cluttering the student’s workspace to give them the room they need.

Get rid of individual desks when needed. Not every classroom is big enough to allow each student to have their own big clunky desk. Sometimes putting 6-8 students at larger worktables is a better use of space and can make covering subjects easier as well as doing projects together. If you think this design might work better in your classroom talk to the administrator about switching out those desks for tables. The odds are there are plenty of extra tables in some store room that you can use.

Get rid of what you don’t need. Teachers hate to get rid of anything. After all, who knows when you might need it again? The problem is that some children are over stimulated by excess stuff hanging on the walls and crammed in the corners. If you find your students distracted a lot, consider cleaning out your room, leaving more open wall space and cleaned out shelves to keep distractions at bay.

Use plenty of organizational containers to keep things in their place. Nothing creates chaos in a classroom quicker than clutter. Be sure to make supplies accessible without them getting in the way by storing like things together in closets, drawers and cubbies.

Create inviting learning centers that your students will want to visit. Make a cozy reading nook in the corner or a brightly decorated art center in the back of the room. Use color, lighting and textures to your advantage. Make each learning center unique and distinctive to help students focus on the task at hand while there.

Don’t be afraid to rearrange your desks and classroom furniture. If a certain layout doesn’t work – change it. Sure it will take some time and energy, but if it makes your daily schedule work better, then try it. Sometimes just moving things around is enough to re-interest students and catch their attention.

Use room dividers when necessary. Seasoned teachers know that separating kids can sometimes be a good thing. Room dividers can be a great way to change the scenery and the atmosphere in a room. When available, experiment with them to see what works best in your situation.

In the past, teacher’s lined student desk in neat individual rows facing the chalkboard and the teacher’s desk. That’s no longer the case. Today’s teachers understand the importance of organizing a classroom for peak efficiency and for optimal learning. That may mean pulling student chairs into a circle for reading time or to play a math game. Or it may mean ditching the desk altogether and opting instead for group learning at a table. Whatever you decide to use to better organize your classroom and excite your students doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you take the time to really think about how your classroom layout can enhance learning or hinder it. Then make the necessary changes.
Chests and trunks: making the most of your storage space

Storage space; it's a perennial problem. Our houses often struggle to accommodate the possessions we can't help but accumulate over the years. All but the most stringent non-hoarders fall foul of the problem eventually - and even if we do manage to make an effort to clear out unwanted items, it's only a matter of time before we build back up to capacity.

So, how to combat the clutter? Top of your priority list should be to maximise the efficiency of your available storage space and one of the best ways to do this is to make good use of storage chests and trunks. Available in a range of sizes, materials and - most importantly - prices, these boxes of wonder are an ideal solution for any taste or budget.

Low-cost plastic chests are perfect for under-bed storage in the master bedroom while, for those with a little more cash to play with, more expensive wicker and wooden trunks can provide much-needed storage while still fitting in aesthetically with the rest of your furniture.

Chests can come in especially handy in family homes, where space is inevitably at a premium. Colourful plastic boxes can be employed as a cheap but stimulating storage solution for kids' bedrooms, for example.

And while wooden trunks are most often situated in hallways or adult bedrooms, they can be a wonderful way to limit the time it takes to tidy up toys from the lounge floor once children have gone to bed. If you decide on a sturdy model, chests and trunks can also even double up as additional seating - just be sure to invest in some thick, comfy cushions for your guests.

Manufactured with storage in mind, trunks and chests naturally offer increased space over and above similarly sized furniture such as chests of drawers. One tip, though: if you plan on using your chest to store lots of smaller bits and pieces, it's often an idea to use plastic containers or dividers inside to help you organise your belongings - and avoiding the need to empty the whole lot out at a later date in search of that elusive item.

When buying a small wardrobe you have a lot to consider. With so many small wardrobes on the market it is not always as simple as you may think to find the one that you are looking for. That being said, if you consider the right details you will get what you want in the end - and that is what matters the most.

Here are three details to consider when shopping for a small wardrobe:

1. Size. How small is small? You are going to find wardrobes of many different sizes and shapes. It is important to get the one that will fit into the space you have designated it for. Make sure you consider size before all else.

2. Durability and quality construction. You want a wardrobe that is going to last, no matter who is using it. Most small wardrobes that are made from wood have a long lifespan. The last thing you want is to spend a lot of money on a wardrobe just to have it fall apart.

3. Style. What style will look best in your home? The answer to this question will be based largely on the current setup of the room in which it will be located. It is very important that you consider all styles and then go from there. Some will match your current décor, some will not.

When buying a small wardrobe you need to consider the size, durability, and style. If you think about all these details you will end up with exactly what you want.

Office Decor And Plants

Your work environment should be one that helps ease the stress that comes along with the profession and allows you to concentrate on the task at hand. One natural and therapeutic way to help relieve office related stress includes adding real plants as office decor. Plants have a calming effect that is an important factor needed in most work settings. Whether you work in a cubicle, office or a large open space, live plants can do wonders for the room as far as a great way to decorate and a fun way to bring positivity in the workspace.

You have two choices when it comes to office decor. You can either choose man-made items to accentuate your working space or you can choose the beauty of nature through real life plants to liven up the room. Plants are versatile as they come in a variety of sizes, colors, shapes, smells and environmental needs. The plants you choose for the office say a lot about what the company is about. Japanese shrubbery can represent a Zen like quality while medicinal plants represent healing. Others can simply be utilized as a treat for sore eyes.

Both the office workers and the clients coming into the space can feel at ease as they admire the natural beauty of the plant life around them. It can be exciting to see how plants are transformed from being merely a plant to a source of decoration in fun and creative ways. Plants can be arranged and placed in places where you normally wouldn't put a plant, which catches the viewer's attention and makes them think of the environment in a positive light. The plants can be used to greet clients as they enter the building or throughout the building itself to give a larger feel of nature and relaxation.

Pots and planters add to the office decor as you can play around with diverse styles, colors and sizes. The larger ones can make big impressions while the smaller ones can be multiplied and placed in various areas. Plants have a way of connecting one another as one must tend to the plant and care for it in order to remain healthy. In the process, office workers will benefit from having unique natural office decor in their work setting on a daily basis.

How to Approach a Lighting Project

Updating the lighting in your home is a wonderful way to add a fresh look.
When deciding to take on a lighting project, keep in mind that it does not start by simply picking out a light fixture. You should take the time to first ask yourself the following questions:

(1) What kind of lighting do I want?
(2) How do I want the space to look?
(3) Are there any special requirements that need to be addressed?
(4) What is the current level of lighting in the area? Is there daylight available?
(5) What mood am I trying to achieve?

Some places require a bright light that does not cast shadows like a closet, laundry room, or a workbench. Other areas such as living, dining and bedrooms should offer a little more drama and pizzazz. Keep these functional differences in mind when you go through the motions of determining what style of lighting will be required.
When you think about the lighting effect you are looking for, you should always consider how the various light sources will be layered. For instance, you'll typically want to have ambient lighting such as a ceiling light or floor lamp for general lighting while offering accent lighting on paintings, sculptures, etc. and finally focused lighting such as a table lamp. You don't want to leave one area of the room under illuminated, while another area blinds you. This can lead to eye strain, headaches, and undo tiredness.

Once you've thought through the above mentioned issues and determined how you want the layering to work, the next step is choosing the fixtures and bulbs that fulfill your requirements. Every room should have a general or ambient light source. If you don't want to have a ceiling fixture, then a floor lamp that directs a wide angle of light up on your ceiling can provide a good source of general lighting. Keep in mind that the lighter the color of your ceiling, the more illumination you will get from this style of lighting. There is not rule that says you cannot have two floor lamps, however keep in mind the balance of the lighting in the room.

If you are working on a room that requires specialized areas for tasks such as reading a book, you will want to add a portable or table lamp. This will provide good lighting to a specific area while not overwhelming any other areas of the room. You may want to consider a 3-way lamp that allows you to vary the level of illumination. In this fashion, the lamp can double as accent lighting when on lower settings.

If you want to add accent lighting for specific areas of the room, then you will probably want to consider spot lights, shelf lighting, or even smaller table lamps and decor lamps.

There are some other points that you may want to keep in mind before making the final decision on your lighting fixtures:

(1) Is the fixture energy efficient?
(2) How durable is the fixture and what will the maintenance costs be?
(3) What is the availability of the fixture? Can you easily find it in stores and expect to have them available in the future?
